There are some bands you hear, and then there are bands you experience.

Based in Beckley, West Virginia, Strings of Green has quickly become one of bluegrass music's most exciting young acts. Their sound is built on something that cannot be faked: true family harmony. Both musically and personally, this family brings a connection to the stage that gives every song depth, energy, and heart.

In January 2026, Strings of Green made history by winning the SPBGMA International Band Championship in Nashville, Tennessee. It was an incredible achievement for any band, but even more remarkable because two of the members were still preteens at the time. Their musicianship, stage presence, and maturity have already captured attention across the country, proving that the future of bluegrass is not only alive but already picking, singing, and standing strong.

Leading the family is Brandon Green, a gifted musician on banjo, dobro, and guitar. Brandon is a two-time National Bluegrass Banjo Champion, winning the title in both 2014 and 2024. With more than 20 years of professional musical experience, he brings great skill and authenticity to every performance.

His accomplishments include winning the first annual Southeast Banjo Championship across three instruments, placing third in the 2025 International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship, and earning multiple West Virginia Vandalia Gathering banjo titles. Brandon also spent more than a decade as faculty at East Tennessee State University, teaching in the Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Studies program. His touring experience includes performances with acclaimed acts such as the Abrams Brothers, the Darrell Webb Band, and Jonathan Buckner & Chosen Road.

Alongside him is Josiah Green, 18, who helps drive the band's rhythm and creative direction on percussion and guitar. A talented composer, Josiah writes original music that brings a fresh voice to the group's traditional bluegrass foundation. After spending much of the band's early years on drums, he recently switched to bluegrass rhythm guitar and quickly mastered the style in time for the band's championship run.

Ezekiel Green, 12, brings remarkable talent to the mandolin. Already a 2025 West Virginia Vandalia Gathering mandolin champion, Ezekiel also earned second place at the 2025 Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention Youth Mandolin Contest and first place in the mandolin division at the inaugural Southeast Banjo Championships. His playing carries a skill and confidence well beyond his years.

Holding down the low end is Ezra Green, 11, on upright bass. Ezra earned second place in the youth division of the first annual Southeast Banjo Championship and switched from uke-bass to upright bass specifically to prepare for the SPBGMA competition. In the months leading up to their historic win, he built up the calluses, strength, and musical confidence needed to anchor the band's sound.

Strings of Green

And the Green family's musical story is still growing. Malachi, 8, is already learning guitar and dobro, while Moriah, 6, is beginning her journey on fiddle. The next generation of Strings of Green is already taking shape.

What makes this band special is more than the awards, more than the ages, and more than the impressive list of accomplishments. Strings of Green represents the living tradition of bluegrass music, passed from hand to hand, generation to generation, and brought to life through discipline, love, and family.

This is exactly the kind of music that belongs in the mountains.
