There are musicians who simply perform songs, and then there are musicians who build them right in front of you.
On Thursday, June 25, Wayfarer Appalachia welcomes Peterstown, West Virginia, singer-songwriter Jonah Carden to the Velvet Room for an intimate evening of soulful vocals, intricate guitar work and original Appalachian music.
A Sound Built One Layer at a Time
For more than 25 years, Jonah Carden has built a respected following throughout the Appalachian region as a one-man acoustic performer. His rich baritone voice carries both strength and vulnerability, while his diverse guitar style moves naturally between blues, rock, Americana and acoustic roots music.
What makes a Jonah Carden performance especially compelling is the way the music comes together.
Using a loop pedal, Jonah creates rhythms, guitar parts and musical textures one layer at a time. A song may begin with a simple beat or guitar progression, then gradually grow into something that sounds far larger than one musician standing onstage.
Part of the experience is hearing the finished song. The other part is watching him create it from scratch.
An Appalachian Songwriter Reaching Listeners Around the World
Jonah is also a prolific songwriter and independent recording artist who has released four albums of original material since 2010.
Across those recordings, his music has remained difficult to place inside any single genre. Somber acoustic ballads can sit beside hard-driving rock, blues and heavier musical influences. The common thread is Jonah’s unmistakable voice, expressive guitar playing and ability to create a mood that feels honest and lived-in.
His blues-driven song “Midnight Blue” has introduced that sound to listeners far beyond Appalachia. The song has earned praise from audiences around the world and has passed more than 100,000 streams on Spotify, while its various YouTube releases have continued to reach new listeners.
It is a meaningful achievement for an independent musician from a small Appalachian town, but it also speaks to something larger: authentic music does not have to come from a major city or a major label to connect with people.
Sometimes it begins in Peterstown, West Virginia, with a guitar, a voice and a song worth hearing.
Music Rooted in Family
Since 2008, Jonah has also performed as a member of the popular classic-rock band One Eyed Jack alongside his father and uncle.
The family trio has become highly regarded for its strong vocal harmonies and its ability to recreate songs that seem almost impossible for a three-piece band to perform. Their years of playing together have helped shape Jonah’s musical instincts, particularly his ear for harmony, arrangement and the way individual parts can work together to create a much larger sound.
That same instinct is evident in his solo performances. Even when Jonah is alone onstage, the music never feels small.
